The Background
The Light School is an elementary level school located in one of the most beautiful yet economically poor regions in Eastern Uganda. It is near the village of Kapchorwa and is one of the areas only Christian schools in an area where the main religion is Islam. Founded by native Pastor Leonard Chemutai and his wife Emily, this school has been a light on a hill and has been where many have come to Christ, both students and teachers. The school itself has known extreme poverty and a lack of resources and funds. Because this is a private school, funding must come from an outside source because they do not qualify for government aid.
The Need

"Its time to go. The school has to leave. The Imam will no longer tolerate your presence here on this land."
The words, though anticipated, were like a punch to the gut for Pastor Leonard who was desperately trying to serve his community and his Lord by sharing Christ and education with others at his small and needy elementary school. He knew that there was no longer any time to try to buy or people to persuade so that they could stay on the land. Uganda NOW Outreach, with the help of some amazing donors, was able to buy land. During the pandemic while schools were shut down, Leonard grew corn on it which helped many hungry families survive the intensely harsh lock downs that would not let up. Then President Museveni finally said that School would be opening up again on January 10th. The school had land but no school building for the children to meet in! The Lord moved mightily once again on behalf of these people and funds came in to build. Right now some semi-permanent structures are being put up and a permanent latrine is being built while the previous landlord allows them to meet in the old structures as they wait for the completion. |

The Goal

Ultimately the goal is to have a quality school campus with permanent structures that includes classrooms, an administrative room, kitchen and pantry, a library, latrines, and a space for play and exercise. While the task seems large and daunting we know that the Lord is the provider of all things and that he holds these children and school in his care.
